Depending on your devotion, dedication and drive, most of you will soon occupy positions of considerable importance in the business world. When you are at the helm of affairs, you may suffer from what I like to call “Self-righteous syndrome”, the chief manifestation of which is that boss is always right. If any suggestion is made to bring about or a new idea is given for adopting an innovative
strategy in manufacturing or marketing, you may at once say “NO”. a recent survey shows that established companies and managing directors have an unfortunate tendency to oppose ideas that are radically new or conflicting with their usual way of doing business. But
then, as has happened in many instances in the past, someone in another organization picks up the same idea and makes it with resounding success, much to the consternation of the ‘always right’ boss.
It does not mean that all new ideas are great and you should go overboard for every new suggestion. It would be naïve to do that. A prudent manager always attempts to figure out what might go wrong with anew proposal. Sometimes the lacunae, pitfalls and objections are patently obvious and overwhelming. In that case, there is no sense in trying to translate the idea into reality. But if the potential benefits are great and the cost of testing small, it will be smart on your part as a manager to try something even if you feel it may noy work. What I wish to
emphasize is that keeping
an open mind is worth what it costs.
I remember that a reputed executive guarded himself against the tendency to say “no” too quickly by putting on the wall of his chamber the following sign:
HOW TO BURY A GOOD IDEA!
-
it will never work
-
We have never done it that way before
-
We are doing fine without it
-
We cannot afford it
-
We are not yet ready for it
-
It is not your responsibility(More rudely: it is none of your business)
